I have imported a shorter image but the slider now stays same height as before, with grey background.

only place i can see to have tried is grid higt but that doesnt do it.

Select the settings link for the slide you want to edit the height on. On the Edit Slider page you can see Grid Settings: where you can adjust height and width. Adjust as needed and see how it works for you.

It works for the slider preview, but has no effect on its size in the website.

Looks like there might be some config elsewhere overriding it.

You have to make sure your selected options related really well
