I’ve translated the flatter theme into French, and generated the corresponding .mo file. I then renamed the files flatter-fr_FR.mo and flatter-fr_FR.po and copied them under wp-content/languages/themes

I then activated WP in French through the Settings -> General menu item, but could not find anything similar for the theme.

What am i doing wrong and/or missing in order to have a fully translated site? so far only stock WP text is translated.

Thank you

PS: I use WP 4.1.1 with the latest flatter version (fresh download)

PS2: I’ve searched the functions.php and common-functions.php without any results

I am french too,

There is a folder languages in flatter theme… Try to put a copy of those two files in wp-content > themes > flatter > languages…

I am sorry but i use WPML for translation and not .mo / .po files. I hope that will work for you

In french : Il y a un dossier langues dans ton thème flatter… si tu utilise le flatter-child thème il faut copier le dossier “languages” dedans et ajouter tes fichiers français… bonne chance

Thanks for the reply. I already put a copy of these files in the language folder of the flatter theme, next to the en_US files. It does not seem to work either.

I ve also checked file permissions and set them the same way as the other files.

I do not use flatter-child; i have yet tto read the doc about how to use it since it will be much better for maintenace.

Thanks

Last thing i have seen around, is to put .mo and .po files directly into flatter folder… try it:
copy also the original language files => so you will have 2 .mo files and 2 .po files inside flatter theme folder. If this don’t work, wait for support team reply.

To enable child theme, just put it in theme folder by FTP and have a look to this topic before enabling it in “appearance > theme”:

Little note, please rename translation files names to fr_FR.mo, fr_FR.po instead of prefixed names. And they must be placed in ..themes/flatter/languages folder.

I redid everything from scratch and got it working. For further references, here is what i did:

Save files as fr_FR.mo / .po under /wp-content/themes/flatter/languages

Set permissions to 664 to fr_FR.*

Copy those two files and save them as flatter-fr_FR.mo / .po under /wp-content/languages/themes

Set permissions to 644 for fr_FR.*

Not sure if the last two steps are required, but it worked.

As for the child theme thing, I’ll review the post today and will attempt to make it.

How can we contribute to the translation of the theme?

  1. Set the theme to “flatter-child” in the WP general settings
  2. delete the .mo file from the /themes/flatter/languages folder
  3. leave the .mo file in the /themes/flatter-child/languages folder
  4. refresh

result: the page is in english, it seems as if the flatter-child files are not used at all.

I did change the “Flatter” into “flatter” in the style.css file of the child theme

Any thoughts?

So if not, put them again in flatter folder as before. (wait for support answer).

Make just a copy of language folder in child theme, in case of theme update.

For file permissions 644 is the normal working way… For folder permissions the normal working way is 755.

Parent theme is calling language files from itself instead of a child. So we can change it easily on parent’s functions.php file. See the attachment.

But I’m confusing how about another customers who use the child theme but they don’t have any translation file in it?

Thanks
